Singapore - The Lion City
Glass and steel high-rises, Chinese shop houses with red tile roofs, Victorian style government buildings, Buddhist temples and Arabian bazaars - they're all part of the diversity and charm of Singapore, the commercial center of Southeast Asia and one of the busiest ports in the world.
The city was founded by Sir Stamford Raffles, who persuaded the Sultan of Jahore to cede Singapore to the East India Company in 1819.
Today, junks and sampans have largely given way to supertankers, freighters and passenger liners. But weekend cricket matches and the venerable Raffles Hotel keep the ambiance of the colonial era alive. Now an independent country, Singapore's population has grown to over three million people. A veritable melting pot of cultures, four languages - Malay, English, Mandarin Chinese and Tamil - have official status, while Buddhism, Taoism, Islam, Hinduism and Christianity are the major faiths. Visitors to Singapore are endlessly enthralled by this tropical isle's fascinating traditions, luxurious hotels, and gleaming shopping centers filled with fabulous duty-free buys.
Getting around Singapore
The very efficient an spotlessly clean underground rail system is also at the terminal, an excellent alternative for those who want to go it alone. A Tourist Day pass allows travel all day on the underground at a very reasonable. They can be purchased in the terminal however a long queue develops when the ship docks. We chose to pay cash for each journey rather than wait in line and spent considerably more on fares, however it is possible to purchase these passes on-line before your cruise. See here.
