Going Ashore at Cruise Ports

General Guidelines

Princess Cruises publish the following Information

WATER

Each morning before your tour departure, chilled water and sodas will be available for purchase from our table located by the gangway. We have found this to be very expensive. Bottled water ashore is usually OK, and if you are uncertain fill up a bottle from the ship and save yourself a lot of money.

EATING & DRINKING ASHORE

As a precaution we advise that if you decide to eat or to drink ashore, you should only use reputable hotels or establishments, drink bottled water and ensure that ice is from a purified source. These simple precautions are a great contribution for maintaining a healthy shipboard community. We always take anti-bacterial hand wipes when we go ashore.

SAFETY AND SECURITY GUIDELINES WHILE ASHORE

Our primary concern at Princess is your safety and security. Despite all of our efforts and in light of recent world events, we remind all of our passengers that you must ultimately assume responsibility for your actions while ashore. In this regard, we would like to remind you of some common sense precautions when visiting your ports of call.

  • Stay in the normal tourist areas and don't travel to out of the way places without the benefit of a reputable guided tour.

  • Always travel with a companion.

  • Do not leave any of your belongings unattended in public areas.

  • Be generally aware of people and activities around you.

  • Do not accept packages from anyone you don't know personally.

  • Keep a low profile - dress and behave conservatively.

  • Be careful in choosing places to eat and drink ashore.

Passengers are cautioned that when ashore, that drugs may be available and offered for sale. Please do not be coerced into purchasing these substances as in most cases you will be caught. Princess Cruises has a zero tolerance policy with regard to the unlawful possession of drugs and any passenger violating this policy will be immediately disembarked from the vessel. Local law enforcement agencies have become especially vigilant in their efforts to eradicate both drug abuse and trafficking and these have included subjecting passengers to a physical search on return to the ship. Should a passenger be disembarked for illegally possessing drugs, Princess is unable to offer any assistance in dealing with the local authorities or making homeward travel arrangements.

Singapore

Singapore is an almost mandatory stop for any cruise departing Fremantle. It one of the busiest ports in the world and has an excellent cruise terminal adjacent to Sentosa Island, and directly under the cable car connecting the island to Singapore.

To see more about Singapore , the port facilities etc please click Singapore Information.

Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia)

Star Cruises have a modern terminal at Port Kelang, however this is a very long way from downtown KL. Be prepared for a long bus ride (90 mins) each way and with the vagaries of traffic probably the best way to get to KL from the Port if you do not want to take the risk is being held up in traffic and missing the ship!

Geraldton (West Australia)

Geraldton seems to be a "filler" port for West Australians and it is usually visited on the next day of the cruise, or the last day. WE always go ashore in Geraldton as it is a short tender ride, and a 5 minute walk from the marina to the shops.

We always take the opportunity to purchase a daily paper, and if outbound pick up essentials that we have forgotten to pack.

The Gorges and cliffs in the  Kalbarri National Park are certainly worth a visit if you have come from interstate of have not visited them before. It is such a contrast of the things to come or the things you have seen.

Langkawi (Malaysia)

Getting on and off the Ship

Any cruise always begins and and at a port and many call at several ports during the cruise, usually for a day. Getting up to 2,000 passengers on and off a ship in a reasonable period of time is a significant logistical effort, especially if some passengers are not as agile as they could be. Added to this are the customs and immigration formalities and the recipe is set for mishaps, delays and frustrated passengers particularly when they are excited and looking forward to a new adventure.

Most major cruise destinations are now gearing up for the increased size of the cruise liners and in most major Asian Ports are building modern Passenger terminals and some Ports do not have facilities large enough for the larger modern passenger liners and require the use of "tenders."

On this page you will find information on a number of ports in South East Asia that we have visited on cruises.
